HOBBS, N.M. - The South Plains College Texan cross country team won their meet for the second week in a row, while the Lady Texans inched closer to rival New Mexico Junior College.
For the second week in a row, the Texans took four of the top five overall spots, led again by Tallam Kipruto who crossed the line first in a time of 26:35.00. Mitchell Driver (27:31.00) was second, followed by Anthony Pequeno (27:44.00) in third place. Finishing fifth overall was Robert Castanon (28:31.00), while Tomilee Lloyd (28:40.00) rounded out the Texans contributing to the team score with a sixth place overall finish. The Texans dominated the team competition scoring only 17 points. Also competing for the Texans was Marcelis Lynch (31:07.00) who finished in 12th place overall.
The Lady Texans took runner-up honors for the second consecutive week, but made host school New Mexico Junior College work to win the title on their home course, as SPC and the Lady T-Birds alternated their scoring runners. Lisa Forsberg finished behind NMJC's top runner to finish second overall in a time of 19:18.00. Crystal Dickenson (19:56.00) finished fourth, Kadian Dunkley (20:42.00) was sixth, Shayla Contreras (21:24.00) crossed the line in eighth position, and Lorianne Pattee (22:57.00) finished 11th among scoring runners. NMJC scorers finished first, third, fifth, seventh, and tenth to defeat the Lady Texans by five points, 26-31.
The Texans and Lady Texans return to the cross country course on September 18th at Meadowbrook Golf Course in Lubbock when they compete at the Texas Tech Cross Country Invitational. Start time for the women is slated for 5:30 p.m., while the men will begin as soon as the women's race is complete.
