ODESSA, TX - The South Plains College Texans and Lady Texans wasted no time making a statement to open the spring rodeo season, turning in standout performances at the Odessa College Rodeo. With multiple short-round qualifiers and a Team Roping championship to headline the weekend, SPC proved it will be a force to contend with in the months ahead.
Under the lights Saturday night, the Texans delivered when it mattered most.
Leading the charge were brothers Jantsen Morris and Jayden Morris, who qualified fourth heading into the short round with a 6.8-second run. When the pressure was on, the duo responded in dominant fashion, stopping the clock at a blistering 6.0 seconds to capture the Team Roping title. Their championship run highlighted a strong overall showing in the event for SPC.
Also reaching the short round in Team Roping were Jaxon Stoker and Levi Sasser, who qualified sixth with an 8.3. The pair held their ground in the finals to secure a sixth-place finish overall, adding valuable points for the Texans.
Stoker wasn't finished there. Competing in multiple events, he qualified ninth in Tie-Down Roping with an 11.9 and finished tied for ninth overall. His consistent performance across events earned him a sixth-place finish in the Men's All-Around standings, showcasing his versatility and competitive grit.
On the women's side, the Lady Texans made their presence known in Goat Tying. Zaran Kirkpatrick set the pace early, qualifying first with a blazing 5.8-second run in the long round. She went on to finish tied for fifth through seventh overall. Teammate Katie Knez qualified fifth with a 6.6 and matched Kirkpatrick in the final standings, while Sierra Telford stayed close behind, finishing eighth after qualifying with a 7.0.
With momentum on their side, the rodeo team will now have a few weeks to regroup and prepare before returning to action March 26–28 at the Western Texas College Rodeo. If their opening performance in Odessa is any indication, the Texans and Lady Texans will be ready to build on their early success when they hit the arena again later this month. If the Odessa College Rodeo is any indication, the Texans and Lady Texans are poised for an exciting and competitive season ahead.
