Lady Texans Fall to Collin County in Region Tournament Opener
South Plains College saw its Region Tournament run cut short Thursday night as the Lady Texans fell to Collin County Community College 85-71 in the opening round at Odessa College.
ODESSA, TX - Collin County jumped out to an early advantage in the first quarter, building a 20-12 lead and maintaining control throughout the opening half. The Cougars continued to extend the margin in the second quarter, pushing their lead to 16 points by halftime.
South Plains came out of the break with renewed energy. The Lady Texans battled in the third quarter, outscoring Collin County 22-20, and carried that momentum into the fourth quarter where both teams scored 20 points. Despite the late push, the early deficit proved too much for SPC to overcome.
The Lady Texans shot 36 percent from the field, 30 percent from three point range and 75 percent from the free throw line. Collin County held an advantage on the boards with 33 rebounds compared to South Plains' 26.
South Plains recorded eight assists and 12 turnovers, while Collin County finished with 19 assists and 14 turnovers. The Lady Texans capitalized on opportunities with 12 points off turnovers and added 14 second chance points along with 18 points in the paint. The Cougars received a strong lift from their bench, which contributed 25 points compared to 12 from the South Plains reserves.
SPC's largest lead of the game was two points in the first quarter, while Collin County built its biggest advantage at 20 points during the third quarter.
Angelina Joao led South Plains with 21 points and three rebounds. Isabel Joao recorded a double double with 16 points and 15 rebounds, while Signe Nordvik added eight points and four rebounds.
South Plains now awaits the possibility of receiving an at-large bid to the NJCAA Women's National Tournament, which will take place March 24-31 in Lake Charles, Louisiana. The Lady Texans are currently 22-6 on the season, finished conference play 10-4, hold a 7-4 record against Region opponents and are 5-2 this season at neutral sites.
