Lady Texans Dominate on the Road, Cruise Past Frank Phillips
South Plains College delivered a complete performance Thursday night in Borger, controlling the game from start to finish in a commanding 68–42 road victory over Frank Phillips College behind dominant rebounding and balanced scoring.
BORGER, TX - South Plains College put together a wire-to-wire road win Thursday evening in Borger, rolling past Frank Phillips College 68–42 on Feb. 12.
The Texans set the tone immediately with a 23–15 first quarter and then effectively ended the suspense in the second, holding Frank Phillips to just five points while adding 14 of their own to take a commanding 37–20 halftime lead. Frank Phillips showed more life after the break, taking the third quarter 12–11, but South Plains responded with its best closing stretch—outscoring the Plainswomen 20–10 in the fourth to push the margin to 26 at the final horn.
Angelina Joao led South Plains with 19 points on 7-of-16 shooting while adding 10 rebounds for a double-double. Isabel Joao was a force on the glass as well, finishing with 13 points and 11 rebounds, including five offensive boards. Maya Braxton-Young chipped in 12 points and five assists, and the Texans got a valuable scoring lift off the bench from Daniela Gongo, who scored 10.
South Plains' advantage showed up most clearly in the rebounding and second-chance opportunities. The Texans won the rebound battle 42–28 and grabbed 14 offensive rebounds, helping them generate steady extra possessions despite shooting 36.8% from the floor and 11-of-20 at the line. They also knocked down seven 3-pointers, with Dilangue Cruz (3-for-5 from deep) and Gongo (2-for-6) providing perimeter punch.
For Frank Phillips, Jayla Hughley accounted for nearly half of the team's offense, scoring 19 points on 9-of-18 shooting, but she received limited support as the Plainswomen finished at 31.6% from the field and just 1-of-4 at the free-throw line. Amaya Lacy added 10 points, and Carina Costa hit three 3-pointers on her way to nine. Frank Phillips struggled to create offense overall, recording just one assist as a team and committing 18 turnovers.
With the win, South Plains improved to 19–4 overall and 7–3 in conference play, while Frank Phillips fell to 13–12 overall and 3–7 in league action.
