SPC basketball spending holiday weekend in Plano
LEVELLAND – The South Plains College Texan and Lady Texan basketball teams will be on the road Thanksgiving day, traveling to Plano for the Collin County Thanksgiving Classic.
Both teams are off to quick starts, as the top-ranked Texans will roll in to Collin County with a 6-0 record and a 42-game winning streak dating to last season. The Lady Texans, meanwhile, won their first six games to begin the season before recently dropping a 66-61 affair to fifth-ranked Hutchinson in a game the Lady Texans led with less than a minute to go.
Texan head coach Steve Green recently stated the goal for his team was to get through the fall semester unscathed. To keep that goal intact, the Texans will have to defeat Murray State College (Okla.) on Friday, followed by Carl Albert State College (Okla.) Saturday. Both games are scheduled for 4 p.m. tip-offs.
Through six games, the SPC men have been led by 6-foot-10 forward Yanick Moreira who is averaging 19-points and nine rebounds per contest. Defensively, he has been a terror for opponents in the paint with three blocks per game. Statistically, Moreira may have had his best game during SPC's last outing – a 77-74 overtime victory at Temple – in which he scored 24 points, pulled down 15 rebounds, swatted away five shots, and even picked up four steals.
Sophomore point guard Devonte Smith also has another solid season brewing, averaging 9.2 points and seven assists.
The Lady Texans are looking to get back to their winning ways as they face Tyler College Friday at noon, followed by host Collin County Saturday at 2 p.m.
TaSheena Moore has led the Lady Texans thus far with 15.6 points per contest. Though she is the only Lady Texan averaging double-figures, a total team effort has helped the SPC women get to where they are now with five others pouring in more than eight points per game.
