Lady Texans split pair of games in Liberal, Kan.
LIBERAL, Kan. – The South Plains College Lady Texans traveled to Liberal, Kan., for the Seward County Classic over the weekend where they expected – and received – two tough contests.
South Plains (6-1) opened the weekend against host Seward County and did not do themselves an favors early as they found themselves in a 10-point hole in the first five minutes of the game and would trail by as many as 13 before heading to the locker room down 32-21.
The Lady Texans roared back with a 13-2 run to start the second half and tied the game up at 34 apiece with 17:31 remaining.
After trading leads for most of the remainder of the game, the Lady Texans went on a 6-0 run the began with a bucket byStephanie Moore with 3:15 to go in the game and ended with a field goal by Shea Myatt with just under 3-minutes left on the clock, giving the Lady Texans a 53-50 advantage.
Seward tied the game for the fifth and final time with just over a minute on the clock, but the Lady Texans scored eight of the final 10 points to earn a 61-55 victory.
Myatt scored a career high for the Lady Texans with 31-points, making 13-of-21 shots from the field and also had seven rebounds.
On Saturday, the Lady Texans once again found themselves facing a double-digit deficit in the first half before hitting the locker room down 29-20 against fifth-ranked Hutchinson College.
In similar fashion to Friday, the Lady Texans came out of the locker room with a furious rally that saw them take a 36-32 lead early in the second half.
The game stayed very tight and featured nine ties and 11 lead changes.
With 48-seconds remaining, Sydney Hearn gave South Plains their final lead of the game, 61-60, with the last of her seven field goals.
The Lady Dragons would go on to score the final six points of the game to capture the win, 66-61.
South Plains will now look toward the Collin County Thanksgiving Classic Nov. 23-24 where they are scheduled to play Tyler College at 12 p.m. Friday and host Collin County at 2 p.m. Saturday.
