South Plains rodeo set to kickoff Spring season in Odessa

LEVELLAND—The South Plains College men's and women's rodeo teams will saddle up their horses and kickoff the 2017 Spring season when they travel to Odessa on Feb. 23 – Feb. 25 for their first rodeo since Oct. 29 at Texas Tech.

The Lady Texans come into the weekend ranked fifth in the Southwest Region with 422.50 total points. The Texans sit at No. 10 with 435 total points to date and will look to move up the ladder with a strong showing in Odessa.

South Plains' Jenna Dallyn currently ranks eighth in the region in goat tying with 150 total points, while Avery Gonzales ranks ninth with 132.5 total points in breakaway roping. Rainy Robinson ranks fourth in the region in barrel racing with 225 total points, while Alex Odle and Kashley Seitz are tied for 14th in the region with 95 total points.

The Texans' Stefan Ramone sits in sixth place overall in the team roping heeler category with 160 points, while Jose Domenigo and Hadley Cloward rank ninth and 11th overall with point totals of 115 and 105, respectively. Kade Sherwood ranks fifth for South Plains in the team roping header category with his 160 total points. Jhett Trenary currently sits in ninth with 115 total points, while Riley Hayes ranks 11th with 105 points overall.

Chet Boren continues to be one of the top steer wrestlers in the country as the Vernal, Utah native is currently ranked second in the region with 275 total points, while Coy Surrett currently sits in 13th place in the region with 120 total points in tie down roping.

Several members of the South Plains College rodeo team traveled to San Antonio on Feb. 12 to compete at the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo to muddy up their boots and prepare for conference journey that lies ahead.

The Texans' Jhett Trenary and Hadley Cloward finished first overall in the team roping competition. The duo ran a 6.5 in the long round and a 6.0 in the short round finishing with a final average time of 12.5. Trenary and Cloward finished ahead of Texas Tech and Eastern New Mexico, who placed second and third, respectively.

Sophomore Rainy Robinson looked to be in midseason form in the barrel racing competition as the Caldwell, Idaho native ran the fastest long round time with a 15.79 and a short round time of 16.00, placing third overall with a final average 31.79.
