Texans Fall at Howard College, 91-83
Facing adversity on the road, the South Plains College Texans showed fight and resilience Thursday night, but a late comeback effort fell short as SPC dropped a 91–83 decision to Howard College on January 29th.
BIG SPRING, TX — The South Plains College Texans dropped a hard-fought road contest to Howard College, 91–83, on January 29th, despite a late surge that cut a once 21-point deficit down to five.
After trailing by as many as 21 points with just over 10 minutes remaining, the Texans showed resilience and battled back behind strong bench production. However, turnovers and foul trouble proved too much to overcome down the stretch.
South Plains shot 41% from the field, 28% from three-point range, and 65% from the free-throw line, while Howard connected on 47% of its field goals, 25% from beyond the arc, and an efficient 84% at the free-throw line. The Texans collected 29 rebounds, but were limited to just five second-chance points on the night and committed 22 turnovers.
Team leaders for the Texans included Antallah Sandlin'el, who finished with 14 points, six rebounds, and two steals. Yohandry Ortiz added 13 points, one rebound, one assist, and one steal, while Keith Richard contributed 13 points, two assists, and two steals in the loss.
A bright spot for SPC came from the bench, which accounted for 40 points, nearly doubling Howard's bench output of 21.
With the loss, the Texans move to 15–5 overall and 4–3 in conference play, currently sitting fifth in the WJCAC standings. South Plains will look to close out the first round of conference play on a high note when they return home to face the Clarendon Bulldogs on Monday, February 2nd, at the Texan Dome.
