Texans Defeat Western Texas, Move Into Third Place in WJCAC Standings
The South Plains College Texans picked up a key conference victory Tuesday night at the Texan Dome, defeating Western Texas College 81–74 after a weather delay pushed the game back one day.
LEVELLAND, TX - The South Plains College Texans picked up a key conference victory Tuesday night at the Texan Dome, defeating Western Texas College 81–74 after a weather delay pushed the game back one day.
Yohandry Ortiz led the charge for SPC with 18 points, four rebounds, and two assists, providing steady offense throughout the night. Micah Bell followed with an all-around performance, recording 16 points, six rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Keith Richard also reached double figures, adding 13 points, five rebounds, and an assist.
South Plains controlled much of the game offensively, outshooting Western Texas from both the field and beyond the arc. The Texans finished with 36 rebounds, generating 11 second-chance points, and forced 16 turnovers. However, Western Texas stayed within striking distance at the free-throw line, shooting 85 percent compared to SPC's 70 percent, and the Texans were only able to convert four points off turnovers.
The contest featured eight ties and five lead changes, with South Plains' largest lead reaching 11 points with 3:42 remaining. The Texans were able to execute down the stretch to secure the seven-point win.
With the victory, SPC improves to 4–2 in WJCAC play and moves into third place in the conference standings. The Texans will have a quick turnaround as they travel to Howard College on Thursday for another key conference matchup. The Hawks currently sit second in the league with a 5–1 conference record, setting the stage for an important battle in the WJCAC race.
