LEVELLAND — The No. 11 South Plains College Texans bounced back in strong fashion Friday night, knocking off the Hill College Rebels 76–64 on day two of the Texan Classic. The victory moves SPC to 6–2 on the season.
South Plains trailed 34–32 at halftime after a tightly contested first half, but the Texans found their rhythm after the break, outscoring Hill College 44–30 in the second half to take control of the matchup.
Hill College stayed within reach thanks to exceptional three-point shooting, knocking down 50% from behind the arc. South Plains struggled from deep, connecting on just 3-of-16 attempts (18%). The Rebels also shot slightly better from the field overall (24–58 FG) compared to the Texans (25–61 FG).
However, the major difference in the game came at the free-throw line and in the foul count. Hill College's inability to stay disciplined, including two technical fouls for talking, proved costly. The Rebels went just 5–7 from the stripe, while South Plains capitalized, shooting 79% and converting 23-of-29 free throws.
Deion Ware led the Texans with an impressive 20 points and 8 rebounds. Yohandry Ortiz added 15 points, and Keith Richard contributed 12. The SPC bench played a huge role, pouring in 47 points and helping push the Texans to their largest lead of the night, a 14-point advantage with 1:56 remaining.
Head Men's Basketball Coach Patrick "Cinco" Boone praised his team's toughness and composure after the win, saying, "Really proud of how our group found a way to win. Sometimes you have to win ugly and our guys stayed the course mentally when our shots weren't dropping from the perimeter. Saw a lot of growth in certain individuals tonight and look forward to seeing how our team can continue to grow and learn in these non-conference games."
South Plains returns to the court Saturday, December 6th, at 6:00 p.m. to face Lamar Community College in the final game of the Texan Classic. The Texans will play three more games before a long break ahead of conference play.
