Balanced offensive attack leads No. 2 Texans over No. 24 Lee College 83-71 Friday

PLANO — Four players scored in double figures Friday as the second-ranked South Plains College men's basketball team knocked off previously unbeaten No. 24 Lee College 83-71 at the East-West Challenge on the campus of Collin County Community College.

South Plains will close out the road trip on Saturday when they take on Navarro at 6 p.m. at the Cougar Gymnasium. The contest will stream live at spctexans.com.

"This was the biggest game of the season because it was the next one," South Plains head coach Hayden Sowers said. "The effectiveness of switching between man and zone defensively gave them some trouble, and that's all credit to our assistants Glen Mayo, Cam Parker, and Reggie Chambers. Those guys switch our defenses throughout the game, and they get all the credit for that. Navarro is a good team, and we have to get back after it tomorrow and get after it again."

Sophomore Jermahri Hill led all scorers in the contest bucketing 19 points for South Plains, including 13 in the front half. Hill has scored in double figures three times this season and is shooting over 45 percent from the field on the year.

"We prepared well through the week, and we knew we couldn't take them lightly," Hill said. "We trusted our coaches and the looks they showed us in practice, and we just tried to go out and execute the game plan. We tried to take good shots, and we were able to move the ball offensively and find good shots."

Kerwin Prince finished with a season-high 18 points, including 16 points in the second half, while Jalen Hampton poured in 16 points and Jabori Mcghee finished with 14 for South Plains.

"We came out with great energy and were able to carry that through 40 minutes," Prince said. "We wanted to get on them early, and we were able to do that and execute what we wanted to do. We tried to match up well, and they didn't know if we were running a man or zone. That shook them up pretty badly, and we need to continue to execute like we did tonight."
