Texans host Temple and Hill in final fall classic
On Friday, South Plains will welcome Temple College (6-3) to the Texan Dome for a 6 p.m. tip-off. The game will be a rematch of the 77-74 overtime victory the Texans attained in Temple Nov. 13.
"I don't think we were quite ready for what hit us," Texan head coach Steve Green said the day after the game. "It's hard to simulate the way they play. They rush it down the floor and we were half a step behind."
The Texans are likely looking forward to returning to the Texan Dome, where they are averaging 97-points-per-game in three contests versus Western Nebraska (Nov. 6), Northeast Colorado (Nov. 9) and North Lake (Nov. 10).
Over their last three games – all away from the Texan Dome – South Plains scored an average of just 67 ppg.
A victory over Temple on Friday would stretch South Plains' win streak to 45 games dating back to last season, a statistic Green said is not talked about much in the locker room.
"Yanick (Moreira) made a joke about it one game, just in passing," Green told the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal recently, "but I don't know that they talk about it, because we've only got four guys back."
On Saturday, South Plains will close out their fall schedule against Hill College (7-4) at 2 p.m.
Through eight games, all-American forward Yanick Moreira has led South Plains, averaging a double-double with 20.5 points and 10.1 rebounds per game. Last year's NJCAA Tournament MVP is also swatting away three shots per game.
As a team, South Plains is scoring 85 points per game, while holding their opponents to only 55.
Live stats will be available for each game of the SPC Texan Classic, while only Friday's SPC-Temple game will feature a live broadcast. Links for the live video of Friday's SPC-Temple rematch can be found at www.spctexans.com.
