BILL POWELL - INDUCTED 2004

When Bill Powell was hired in 1958, he became the first person to lead the athletic department and coach men’s basketball at South Plains College—a pioneer whose influence helped shape the foundation of SPC athletics. Recruiting his earliest players from local pick-up games, Powell quickly built a competitive program and guided the Texans to their first Western Junior College Athletic Conference championship during the 1965–66 season. He stepped down as head basketball coach in 1967, but his impact on SPC was far from finished.

Throughout his tenure from 1958 to 1980, Powell played an essential role in nearly every facet of the athletic department. He coached the Texan golf team until 1973, and in the spring of 1975, he stepped in to lead the newly established women’s basketball program during its inaugural season. Powell continued to serve the college as athletic director until 1978 and later as chair of the physical education department, a position he held until his retirement in 1980.

A true builder of programs and mentor to generations of student-athletes, Bill Powell’s leadership and dedication established a legacy that remains deeply woven into the history of South Plains College athletics.
