A.J. MOORE – INDUCTED 2016 - HALL OF FAME
A.J. Moore’s legacy as one of the greatest all-around athletes in South Plains College history is firmly cemented by his extraordinary achievements in the decathlon and across multiple track and field events. His versatility, dominance, and national impact made him one of the premier junior college athletes of his era.
Moore earned All-American honors for the Texans in 1982 after a standout season in the decathlon, and he elevated his performance even further in 1983, once again earning NJCAA All-American recognition while capturing the NJCAA national championship in the event. That same year, he was the conference champion and a national qualifier in the high jump. Moore was named the NJCAA National Meet MVP in 1982 and went on to hold the NJCAA national record in the decathlon for an impressive 18 years—one of the longest-standing records in the event’s history.
After transferring to a four-year university, Moore continued to excel on the national stage. In 1984, he qualified for the NCAA Division II National Championships in the long jump and the 400-meter relay and earned All-American honors in the decathlon. He also claimed All-Conference honors in both the javelin and the long jump that season. As a senior in 1985, Moore again qualified for the national meet in the decathlon, long jump, and 400-meter relay, while earning additional All-Conference awards in the long jump and javelin.
Moore’s elite talent earned him national recognition beyond the collegiate ranks. In 1987, he was selected as a decathlon team member for the USA Olympic Training Center and qualified for the USA Track & Field Championships—further testament to his status as one of the nation’s top multi-event athletes.
His storied career later earned him a place in the 1999 book Decathletes of the 20th Century, where he was recognized among the top 300 decathletes of all time. For his exceptional contributions to the sport and his lasting impact on South Plains College, A.J. Moore was inducted into the NJCAA Hall of Fame in 2016.
