LEVELLAND — The South Plains College men's and women's rodeo teams are slated to travel to Stephenville, Texas for the 55th Annual Tarleton State University Rodeo at the Lone Star Arena, April 22-24.
The final rodeo of the regular season, the Lady Texans enter the weekend currently second in the Southwest Region with 1,335 points, holding a 30 point lead over Texas Tech University who is third in the region standings with 1,305 points. Weatherford College currently leads the women's team standings with 1,693 points. The top two teams in the final region standings qualify for the College National Finals Rodeo in Casper, Wyoming, June 13-19. The Texans currently sit eighth overall in the men's team standings with 863.3 points, with Clarendon college and Western Texas College holding down the top two spots.
In their last outing at the Western Texas College Rodeo on April 18, the Lady Texans finished with 165 points to place third overall, while the Texans placed 12th in the men's team standings in Snyder with 80 points.
Samantha Taylor led SPC with a third-place finish in goat tying, tallying110 points. Taylor ran a 7.2 in the long round and a 7.9 in the finals to finish with a 15.1 average. Taylor currently sits seventh in the region standings in goat tying with 270 points. South Plains' Brooke Swaffield picked up 45 individual points in goat tying, placing sixth in the event. Swaffield turned in a 7.3 in the long round and an 8.8 in the finals to finish with a 16.6 average.
Madison Rice scored for the Lady Texans in goat tying, placing seventh overall. Rice ran a 7.3 in the long round and a 9.7 in the finals, tacking on 15 points. Rice is currently fifth in the region standings in goat tying with 320 points. Emery Mask notched 40 points for South Plains in barrel racing, placing ninth overall. Mask posted a 17.86 in the long round and a 22.87 in the finals to finish with a 40.73 average. Mask now sits second overall in the region standings in barrel racing with 495 points.
South Plains' Tee McLeod totaled 80 points in steer wrestling, placing third overall for the Texans. McLeod turned in a 4.9 in the long round and a 4.6 in the finals, posting a final average of 9.5. McLeod moved up nine spots in the region standings and is currently 10th overall with 175 points in steer wrestling.
