South Plains College track and field teams open outdoor season Friday at West Texas A&M University

LEVELLAND — Placing first and second at the indoor national meet just two weeks ago, the South Plains College men's and women's track and field teams will lace up their spikes on Friday as they open the outdoor season at the 2021 WT Spring Break Classic at the West Texas A&M University Track and Field Complex.

Like most teams around the country, the Texans and Lady Texans are eager to hit the track for an outdoor meet after the 2020 outdoor season was canceled due to Covid-19. Both teams will once again be in the hunt for an outdoor national crown, which will be handed out May 11-13 in Levelland, with South Plains College hosting the NJCAA Outdoor National Championships.

South Plains is slated to compete at six outdoor meets leading up to nationals, including the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays March 25-27 in Austin, followed by a trip to Angelo State for the David Noble Relays March 31-April 2. SPC will then travel down the road to Lubbock for the Masked Rider Open April 9-10, before competing at the Oliver Jackson Twilight April 21 in Abilene, capping the regular season with a trip to Lubbock for the Corky/Crofoot Shootout April 30-May 1.

The Texans will also lean on Thomas Nieto, who placed second nationally in the pole vault with a clearance of 16' 6.75" at indoor nationals. South Plains also finished runner-up in the men's 4x400 relay, posting a final time of 3:10.18.
