Yanouri places ninth at Angelo State University Blue and Gold Classic

SAN ANGELO — The South Plains College men's and women's cross country teams competed in their final meet before the regional championships on Wednesday, running at the Angelo State University Blue and Gold Classic at the ASU Cross Country Course.

Battling rainy conditions, sophomore All-American Mehdi Yanouri led the way for the Texans once again, placing ninth overall in a time of 26:48.2 in the men's 8k. Freshman Christian Francisco turned in a time of 28:36.2, a new personal best, and placed 14th overall.

Jeniel Jones was the first runner across the line for the Lady Texans in the women's 6k, placing 17th with a time of 26:13.0. Freshman Esmeralda Espinoza posted a time of 26:21.7, placing 18th overall.

South Plains will be back on the course at the Region V Championship meet on Oct. 30 in Hobbs, New Mexico, with the men's race slated to get underway at 10:30 a.m. MST, followed by the women's race at 11:15.
