South Plains College rodeo teams primed for Texas Tech University Rodeo Oct. 29-31

LEVELLAND — The South Plains College men's and women's rodeo teams are slated to return to the arena this weekend when they compete at the Texas Tech University Rodeo Oct. 29-31 at Cook's Garage in Lubbock.  

The Lady Texans come in ranked first in the Southwest Region in the team standings after winning the women's team title in their last outing on Oct. 18 in Clarendon. The Lady Texans have racked up 590 points to date, with Texas Tech currently second with 445 points. The Texans head to Lubbock currently eighth in the region standings with 213.33 points, with Clarendon College leading the men's division with 1,375 points.

Freshman Emery Mask will look to add to her season total and keep her spot atop the region rankings, as the Amarillo native is currently first in the region in barrel racing with 395 points, holding a 55 point lead over Texas Tech's Bristan Kennedy who is second in the region with 340 points. The Lady Texans also hold the top spot in breakaway roping, as freshman Madison Rice leads the Southwest Region with 195 points.

Trailing Weatherford College by 35 points heading to Clarendon, the Lady Texans took first overall with 225 points, taking hold of first place in the region with 590 team points to date. Texas Tech University placed second on Saturday with 215 points. The Texans rodeo their way to a ninth-place team finish with 70 points, with Clarendon College placing first in the men's division with 605 points.

South Plains' Emery Mask, who came into the weekend already leading the Southwest Region in barrel racing earned a second-place overall finish Saturday night. Mask ran the fastest long round time on Thursday in 16.93, which she followed up with a time of 16.80 in the finals, capping the event with a 33.73 average, picking up 145 points for the Lady Texans.

The Lady Texans tallied 80 points to their team total in breakaway roping thanks to a sixth-place overall finish from Madison Rice. Rice turned in a time of 2.2 in the long round and clocked a 12.5 in the finals, ending the event with a 14.70 average for South Plains. Meghan McGinley represented the Lady Texans in the goat tying finals, earning a third-place overall finish. McGinley ran a 7.8 in the long round, followed by a 7.7 in the finals to notch 80 individual points.

Kaden Prince got things rolling for the Texans in the team roping event with a sixth-place overall finish. Prince paired up with Caden Clay from Tarleton State, with the duo turning in the top time of 6.1 in the long round, but missed in the finals. Prince and Clay finished with a 106.1 average with Prince netting 70 points for the Texans. 

Titan Quigg represented the Texans in the tiedown roping finals, turning in a ninth-place overall finish. Quigg clocked a time of 8.5 in the long round before missing in the finals, earning 50 individual points on the weekend. The Texans had a pair of cowboys wrestle their way into the steer wrestling short round as Dawson Stewart and Colt Honey finished seventh and eighth overall, respectively. Stewart took seventh following a run of 5.7 in the long round and a 13.4 in the finals, capping the event with a 19.1 average. Honey placed eighth with a run of 5.1 in the long round and a 16.0 in the finals, earning 35 individual points.
