South Plains College rodeo to begin season Sept. 24-26 in Alpine

LEVELLAND — The South Plains College men's and women's rodeo teams will open the 2020 season this week at the 75th annual Sul Ross State University Rodeo September 24-26 at the S.A.L.E. Arena in Alpine, Texas.

With 17 teams set to compete, the rodeo will stream live in its entirety on the Sul Ross State University Sports Network, which can be accessed at the following link: https://livestream.com/srsumedia/sulrossrodeo75. Action is slated to begin with barrel racing slack at noon on Thursday, with the main rodeo performances to take place at 7 p.m. each night.

South Plains will look to pick up where they left off last season before the 2019-2020 season came to a halt due to Covid-19. The Lady Texans ended the year third in the final team standings in the Southwest Region and were the top team in the Western Junior College Athletic Conference with 900 points. Sophomore Elle Eagles returns for the Lady Texans after a pair of top region finishes a year ago. Eagles was ninth overall in goat tying with 195 points, and ended the year 13th overall in breakaway roping with 110 points and will be a catalyst for the Lady Texans again this season.

The Texans were also near the top of the final region standings last season, ending the year with a sixth-place overall finish and were third in the Western Junior College Athletic Conference. The Texans return one of the stop steer wrestlers in the region in Clay Guthrie who finished the year third overall in the final standings with 330 points. Stefan Ramone will also be back on the saddle competing for South Plains following a third-place region finish a year ago in team roping with 250 points. The Texans will also look to sophomore Dawson Stewart who capped the year 10th overall in steer wrestling with 150 points.

Following week one, South Plains will be back in the arena Oct. 1-3 in Vernon for the Vernon College Rodeo, followed by a trip to Clarendon College for the Clarendon College Rodeo Oct. 15-17.
