LEVELLAND — The South Plains College track and field program had a number of former athletes excel at theIR respective conference championship meets over the weekend while also seeing a former Lady Texan qualify for the sport's greatest venue.
Former South Plains All-American Sally Kipyego qualified for the 2020 Summer Olympics Saturday in the marathon. Kipyego, who competed for South Plains from 2005-2006, competed at the US Olympic Marathon Trials in Atlanta, where she ran 2:28.52 to take the third and final spot on the roster. Kipyego will represent the United States in Tokyo this summer as she competes against the world's top athletes from across the globe.
A three-time All-American for the Texans, senior Fabian Edoki won the men's long jump competing for Florida State University at the 2020 ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships in Indiana, jumping a personal best with a mark of 25' 9.25". Former Texan great Laquan Nairn will join Edoki at the NCAA Indoor National Championships after the Bahamas native and current Arkansas Razorback placed second in the long jump with a mark of 26' 3.75" at the 2020 SEC Indoor Championships, and took third in the triple jump with a jump of 52' 2.75".
Competing for Texas Tech after a stellar career in Levelland, Ruth Usoro swept the women's horizontal jumps at the 2020 Big 12 Indoor Championships. Usoro won the women's long jump with a mark of 6.54m and followed up with a first place finish in the triple jump, soaring 13.31m. Looking to clinch his ticket to Indoor nationals, former Texan Robert Dunning won the men's 60-meter hurdles competing for the University of Alabama at the SEC Indoor Championships, posting a blistering time of 7.65 to take the top spot. A long-distance specialist in Levelland, Filmon Beyene was crowned conference champion for Texas Southern in the men's 5000 meters at the 2020 SWAC Indoor Championships, posting a final time of 15:27.32.
The South Plains College men's and women's track and field teams will be looking to add to their own trophy case this weekend as they hit the road for the 2020 NJCAA Indoor Track and Field National Championships March 6-7 in Lynchburg, Virginia at the Liberty Indoor Track Complex.
