Germond, Noah, and Shematsi ink Div. I scholarships Wednesday on Singing Day

LEVELLAND — The South Plains College women's basketball team celebrated signing day in a major way Wednesday afternoon as three members from the 2019 squad inked Div. I scholarships to play at the next level.

Sophomore Sarah Shematsi, a 6-foot-2 small forward from France signed with LSU, choosing the Tigers over Miami and Kansas State. Shematsi was instrumental in the Lady Texans' Elite Eight run a year ago, earning All-Region honors and was named the Freshman of the Year in the Western Junior College Athletic Conference.

Shematsi averaged 13.3 points and 5.1 rebounds during her first year with the Lady Texans, shooting over 45 percent from the floor. Shematsi has helped the second-ranked Lady Texans to a 4-0 start this season and is averaging 15.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per game, shooting a 69.7 percent clip from the field and 86.7 percent from the 3-point line.

South Plains point guard Caroline Germond will head east next season to play for the TCU Lady Horned Frogs in the Big 12 Conference. Germond has been the catalyst for the Lady Texans during her time in Levelland, earning Defensive Player of the Year honors in the Western Junior College Athletic Conference as a freshman.

A 5-foot-7 guard from France, Germond is averaging 11.8 points and 5.3 assists per game this season. During her freshman stint, Germond averaged over nine points and 3.7 assists per game, dishing out a team-high 116 assist to go along with 89 total steals which ranked 20th nationally a year ago.

Joining Germond in Fort Worth next year will be Channel Noah, a 6-foot-5 sophomore forward from France who has stepped in in a big way for the Lady Texans this season. Anchoring the Lady Texans inside the paint, Noah is averaging just over six points and 7.5 rebounds per game, shooting 60 percent from the field as she looks to play a major role for South Plains as they look to get back to NJCAA Women's National Tournament.

The Lady Texans will be on the road for the first time this weekend when they travel to Hobbs for the New Mexico Junior College Classic. South Plains will square off with No. 15 Salt Lake on Friday at 4 p.m. MST before a 1 p.m. MST contest against Grayson on Saturday. Both games will stream live at
