ALPINE, Texas - The South Plains College Texan and Lady Texan rodeo teams got off to a good start during the first two sessions of the Sul Ross State rodeo in Alpine Thursday night and Friday morning as they have one leading an event and several more vying for spots in Saturday's short round.
Dylan Wahlert helped South Plains get off to a positive start in Thursday evening's first event, bareback riding. Wahlert was the last rider to come out of the shoot, and he saved the best for last as he rode to a performance leading score of 70 points. Wahlert will sit back and watch Friday night to see if his score holds up during the second performance.
Tate Teague was the third to compete in the calf roping event where he tied down his calf in what was at the time the quickest time, 11.9 seconds. By the end of the event Teague held the second fastest time but has since moved to ninth overall following Friday morning's slack and will have to wait and see if he will advance.
Colt Cleavinger - who won last week's bull riding competition in Portales - rode the saddlebronc horse ‘Mr. Boombastic' to a humble score of 59. The ride was fifth best of the evening with 11 riders remaining Friday night. Cleavinger is also entered in the bull riding competition Friday evening.
In goat tying,
Kylee Mackelprang sped to a time of 9.2 seconds during Thursday's first performance, second best of the round. Mackelprang has since fallen to ninth with the conclusion of Friday slack.
Jessie Kate Cole's Friday morning time of 3.1 seconds in breakaway roping is also good for ninth overall with 62 ropers remaining in the field.
Teammate
Keyla Kothman also recorded a stellar time of 3.3 seconds in the breakaway event, ranking her 11th overall.
Six SPC athletes are scheduled to compete Friday night during the second performance with one more to follow during slack. Nine will compete Saturday morning before the short round is figured. Typically, the top 10 (including ties) qualify for the final round.
Friday's performance is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m., while Saturday's slack will begin at 9 a.m. The final performance is set for 7 p.m. Saturday night.
