LEVELLAND - With days of the 2012 NJCAA Outdoor Track and
Field Championships in the books and only one remaining, the South Plains
College Track and Field teams appear poised to at least challenge for another
team title for both the men and women after a strong second day while hosting
the championship meet at the Texan Track and Field Complex on the South Plains
College campus.
Sophomore Keri Emanuel earned the first individual title for South Plains College when she soared to a distance of 41-feet-01.75 in the triple jump competition.
The South Plains quartet of Darroneshia Lott, Shana-Gaye Tracey, Michaela Johnson, and Natoya Goule took home the first running event final when they clocked a time of 9:06.00 in the women's 4x800-meter relay. South Plains also received a big second place finish in the shot put from sophomore Jessica Ramsey. Ramsey set a new season and personal best with a toss of 50-05.25 and just missed earning the championship in the event by two inches.
At the end of the second day of competition the Lady Texans are in second place behind their rivals from Iowa Central with 37 points and will be well represented on the final day with athletes competing in every final except the women's 100 meter run.
The Texans have yet to capture their first individual or relay title, but received second place finishes from Juan Vasquez in the men's decathlon as well as the 4x800 meter relay team and are currently fifth overall in the team standings with 24 points.
Similarly, the Texans are expected to be highly competitive in every running final and almost every field event final held Thursday.
"I was pleased with our effort today," said head coach Chris Beene. "We definitely put people in the finals that can make a difference for us tomorrow. I am excited and look forward to the final day.
"We have some special young men and women who are giving their all for SPC. I hope we can bring home both titles tomorrow."
The final day of the NJCAA Outdoor Championships is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. when Amethyst Boyd will attempt to defend her NJCAA crown in the women's javelin. Opening ceremonies will begin just before the running event finals at 12:45 p.m.
