Chris Beene and his South Plains College Texan and Lady Texan Track and Field teams and Saturday's final regular season meeting at Texas Tech's Fuller Track and Field Stadium was no different as Beene's athletes appear primed to host and compete in the NJCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships after improving upon 31 season bests that are also NJCAA qualifying marks, claiming ten titles, breaking two school records, and ending the meet by blasting an 18 year old NJCAA record in the men's 4x400M Relay.
Under the Fuller track lights and with near perfect conditions, the men's 4x400M Relay team stepped onto the track for the final event of the day with three freshman and one sophomore in the lineup.
Dakarie McKinnie got the Texans off to a good start as he began making up the stagger on the backstretch and appeared to come off the final curve with a slight lead. McKinnie handed the baton to
Daniel Harper about the same time as his opponents from Texas Tech after a 46.2 second opening leg.
Upon entering the back straightaway, Harper sat in second after Texas Tech surged to the lead. Harper remained comfortable and kicked past the Red Raiders second leg as he brought the baton to sophomore
Bralon Taplin in a blazing split of 44.3 seconds.
As Taplin rounded the track it became apparent that Texas Tech would need a superhuman effort from 400 meter star Gil Roberts as the Texans extended their lead.
Vernon Norwood handled anchor duties against the former World Championship qualifier but ran a superb 45 second anchor that brought South Plains home in a new NJCAA record time of 3:01.32, breaking the 1994 mark of 3:01.89 set by Blinn College. At this time the mark is quicker than any NCAA Division school, according to the lists posted at TFRRS.org.
Beene could not have been more ecstatic about the performance.
"That was such a big deal. When you think about all the phenomenal teams that there have been in junior college for us to break the national record by a half-second or more really tells you how good our guys are and to get three of them back next year is even more amazing," the eighth-year track coach said before crediting his assistant. "It tells you a lot about Coach Wiley and what he does with that group in training and how good of a coach he is. I think he is one of the best 400 meter coaches in the country and I think this performance shows it.
As for the rest of his teams performances, Beene was equally fired up.
"It is certainly what we needed. You like to have one last really good meet before nationals. A good tuneup. Everywhere we turned around we were having PR's, people running just really good times," he said.
Even with all the great performances that resulted in ten first place finishes for the Texans and Lady Texans, the individual performance of the meet would quite possibly have to go to
Julian Parker.
Parker finished second behind teammate
Kemoy Campbell (1:49.95) in the men's 800M Run, improving upon his previous personal best time by more than four seconds as he nearly caught Campbell at the line in 1:50.32.
Parker, whose best time last year was just under two-minutes, greeted Beene with a big hug following the race.
"He is a gutsy kid," Beene said of Parker. "His workouts this week looked great and I knew he could run well but that fast was awesome."
South Plains College will now attempt to keep their strings of consecutive NJCAA Championships intact. The Texan men will be gunning for their sixth straight team title, and the Lady Texans their fourth, when they host the NJCAA Outdoor Championships May 15-17 at the Texan Track and Field Complex.
