BIG SPRING - The South Plains College Texan and Lady Texan rodeo teams completed their ninth rodeo of the season this past weekend with the conclusion of the Howard College rodeo where SPC athletes found success in the goat tying and team roping competitions.
Kelli Kindig and Laramie Wing each advanced to Saturday's final round in goat tying. Kindig squeaked into Saturday's short round by tying with the ninth quickest time of 10.7 seconds. She was able to match that time Saturday, giving her a two day total of 21.4 seconds which was good for fifth place overall.
Wing, meanwhile, got off to a slightly better start than her teammate when she placed fourth in the first round of competition, posting a time of 10.3 seconds. Wing was unable to better her performance Saturday evening as she finished with a time of 12.2 seconds, giving her a two day total of 22.5 seconds and a ninth place finish.
Blake Gagnon and Ty Willick teamed up and turned in a fantastic time of 6.8 seconds in the first round of team roping during Friday morning slack. The time held up as the third quickest time entering the finals, giving each 40 championship points.
The duo came up short in Saturday's final performance as they were unable to register a time and wound up eighth overall.
Gagnon, who had recently moved up to ninth in the steer wrestling standings, failed to advance to the final performance in the event and will be hard pressed to qualify to June's College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR) with only one competition remaining. Entering the Howard College Rodeo, Gagnon trailed third place by 150 points. Each of the top three in the event each made the final and added to their point totals.
The South Plains College Rodeo teams will wrap up their seasons next weekend when they compete in the Tarleton State University Rodeo in Stephenville, Texas April 19-21.
