LUBBOCK - After taking a weekend off, the South Plains College Texan and Lady Texan track and field teams returned to action in full force at the Texas Tech Athletic Training Center Saturday. Athletes representing South Plains College had another splendid outing as two school records were tied and five first place finishes were earned.

Freshman Jarvis Gotch is the first Texan to earn a school record in 2012, tying the record of 24-feet, 10-inches set last indoor season by Anthony May. Gotch won the event as well, defeating the second best attempt by more than a foot.

Keri Emanuel tied Collen Felix's 2009 school record in the triple jump with a best leap of 40-07.50. The mark is Emmanuel's best as a Lady Texan and is a little more than a 5-inch improvement upon her best indoor mark last year. She did jump better during the 2011 outdoor season, eclipsing 41-feet.

Emanuel and Victoria Flemons took the first and third spots in the women's long jump, both finishing with season bests. Emanuel's best jump of 18-10.75 won by only an inch and Flemons was right behind with a best of 18-09.25.

Contesting the men's 55-meter dash for the first time this season, Shavez Hart took top honors in the short sprint with a time of 6.34 seconds. Hart improved mightily upon his preliminary time of 6.44 seconds, which was only the ninth fastest heading into the finals.

Sophomore Kemoy Campbell remained undefeated on the season, outdueling Texas Tech's Ezekiel Kissorio to win with a time of 4:12.21. The mile field went through the first 800-meters in a pedestrian 2:11, but Campbell showed his speed and strength over the last half of the race by closing in 2:01.

It took Tyler Daniel Harper only 47.03 seconds to get to the finish line in the men's 400-meter dash as he led a 1-2-3 Texan sweep in the event. Sophomore Bralon Taplin finished second in 47.38 seconds, while freshman Vernon Norwood was third in 47.49 seconds.

Moments before the men's 400-meter dash, Lady Texan's Sparkle McKnight and Janeil Bellille finished second and third behind former SPC athlete Janelle Redhead, who is now competing for Wayland Baptist. Coming off the final curve, McKnight tried to close on Redhead on the inside but came up just short with a time of 54.14 seconds. Bellille's time was 54.83 seconds. Redhead's winning time of 54.09 seconds was shy of her 2011 season best of 53.50 seconds.

Including McKnight and Taplin in the men's and women's 400-meter dashes and Emmanuel in the women's triple jump, South Plains concluded the meet with six individual second place finishes that included Natoya Goule (2:57.49) in the women's 1,000-meter run; Shevaun Marsh (2:31.96) in the men's 1,000-meter run; and Jessica Ramsey (46-07.50) in the women's shot put. Both men's and women's 4x400-meter relays also finished second. The women's team of Amoy Blake, Shana-Gaye Tracey, Darroneshia Lott, and Lucy Fortune clocked a time of 3:52.97, while the men's team of Anthonio Mascoll, Taplin, Kourt'ney Payne, and Dakarie McKinnie crossed the line in 3:15.03.

Now competing for Texas Tech University, former Lady Texan standout Kelly Closse blasted the field of the women's weight throw and broke Texas Tech and facility records in the process. Closse finished with a best of 70-09.00.

South Plains will next compete at the Tyson Invitational on the campus of the University of Arkansas February 10-11 where they will conclude their indoor season.
