LUBBOCK - The South Plains College Texan and Lady Texan track teams opened their 2012 indoor season by winning two individual titles Friday evening during the first day of the Texas Tech Open at the Athletic Training Center. South Plains had athletes entered in only three events.
Sophomores Sparkle McKnight and Janeil Bellille swept the top two spots in the 600-yard run when the duo fought to a tight finish with times of 1:24.02 and 1:24.07. Teammate Shana-Gaye Tracey completed the race with a fourth place finish and a time of 1:27.37.
Bralon Taplin cruised to a comfortable victory in the men's 600-yard run, defeating former SPC and current Texas Tech star Isaiah Gill by more than a second with a time of 1:10.60. Texan runners then went on to sweep places 4-11 of the race.
Competing in her first track race as a Lady Texan, Darroneshia Lott's time of 2:59.63 was good for a third place finish in the women's 1,000-meter run.
The Texans and Lady Texans will compete in only the men's and women's 4x400-meter relays on the second and final day of the Texas Tech Open which is scheduled to begin a rolling schedule at 11 a.m. with the 55 meter dash and 12:30 p.m. with the women's mile run.
