SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - The South Plains College Lady Texan basketball team began 2012 a little sluggish when they fell behind Scottsdale early Thursday evening. After trailing by as many as 18 points, the Lady Texans went to the locker room down by 15 points, 37-22.
When the second half began, things soon got interesting as South Plains scrapped their way back into the game.
After Kayla Turner put the Lady Texans on the board first in the second half, the Fighting Lady Artichokes countered with a couple baskets of their own. A 9-2 scoring run that was capped by back-to-back 3-point baskets by Ashley Roberts got SPC back to within single digits and prompted Scottsdale to take a full timeout to regroup.
A two-point field goal temporarily gave Scottsdale an 11 point lead, but baskets by Lady Texan players Turner and Sydney Hearn along with Roberts sandwiching a couple free throws in between brought South Plains to within five points with 12 minutes, 55 seconds still remaining on the clock.
Scottsdale's Mason Hawk tried to help her team regain control of the game when she nailed a 3, but SPC once again came charging back with a scoring run. This one was a 7-0 run that included four points from sophomore Raely Parada and three from Roberts to get the Lady Texans to within a single point, 50-49.
The Lady Texans took their first lead since leading by one point in the opening minutes of the game on a Shea Myatt field goal with just under six minutes remaining in the game. A Hearn field goal then put SPC ahead by four.
Five consecutive Artichoke points plus Hearn and Myatt fouling out for SPC momentarily put the game in doubt for the Lady Texans. However, they responded by finishing the game with the final six points scored to earn the victory, 63-58.
The win improves the Lady Texans record to 3-10, while dropping Scottsdale to 2-12.
Roberts led all scorers with 22 points, making 7-of-20 shots from the field as well as sinking 5-of-7 from the charity stripe. Kayla Turner and Shea Myatt scored 11 and 10 points, while Jazzmin Hill and Hearn contributed with eight apiece.
The Lady Texans are now scheduled to play the Mesa College Lady T-Birds (10-5) Friday, January 6 at 5 p.m. CST. On January 7 they will enjoy a day off from competition before facing Phoenix College Sunday, January 8 and then Pima College January 9 in Tucson.
