PLANO, Texas - Ashley Roberts scored a team high 28 points and Stephanie Moore chipped in with her first career double-double as a Lady Texan, but that was not enough for South Plains College to overcome the Lady Apaches of Tyler College in their first game of the Collin County Thanksgiving Classic. The loss marks the fifth straight for the Lady Texans as they now turn their focus to tournament host Collin County.
SPC kept the game close for much of the first half. The game was knotted at 23 each with 5-minutes, 52-seconds remaining when Tyler made their first run that helped them to a nine point halftime lead.
Tyler College opened up the second half with a three-point basket and would lead by as many as 15. The Lady Texans had some fight as they got to within six point on three occasions late in the second half, the first thanks to a 9-0 run that got SPC within striking distance, 57-51, with 6:16 to go. The final score would have South Plains on the wrong end of a 70-60 final score.
Roberts made 10-of-26 shots from the field, but only 4-of-18 from beyond the three-point line while playing every minute of the contest. Moore chipped in with 18 points and also pulled down 13 boards - eight offensive - to record her first double-double of the season. Avril Matthews did a good job of protecting the ball as she recorded only one turnover opposed to nine assists.
The Lady Texans (1-7) return to action at 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon when they face host Collin County (3-4). Live stats and video will be available at www.spctexans.com.
