LEVELLAND, Texas - One week after competing in the NJCAA Cross Country Championships in Hobbs, N.M., the South Plains College cross country teams have departed for their final event of the 2011 fall season and will take part in the NJCAA Half-Marathon Championships on Saturday, November 19 in Marietta, Ga. Chattahoochee Technical College is hosting the event.
The event will take place on the Silver Comet Trail, with the women's race beginning at 7:30 a.m., followed by the men's race at 7:40 a.m.
Similar to cross country championship meets, the NJCAA Half-Marathon champion is determined by the lowest score. The only difference between the two events, besides the length of the races, is only three runners count toward a final team score and a maximum of five runners may participate per team.
The Lady Texans tied for the team title at the 2010 championship meet in Overland Park, Kan. with 17-points. This year's Lady Texan squad will be much younger with only Kirsten Taylor returning. Darroneshia Lott, Michaela Johnson, and Britney Shedd are all freshmen.
The Texans will look to improve upon their third place finish from a year ago and have the experience to do it with three returning from the squad that scored 59 points. Kemoy Campbell, who is coming off a victory at the NJCAA cross country championships, placed eighth last year while Joey Villarreal and Isacc Placencia were the Texans second and fourth runners, placing 13th and 33rd, respectively. Also competing is Bretton Villarreal and Jonathan Lira.
Results and a recap will be posted at www.spctexans.com following the races.
