MIDLAND, Texas - Sophomore's Stanton Kidd and Malcom Miller played big Friday night, helping lead the No. 18 Texans to an 81-74 victory over the sixth-ranked Trinity Valley Community College Cardinals at the Al G. Langford Chaparral Center on the campus of Midland College.
Kidd scored 13 in the first half to help South Plains College take a 19-point lead to the locker room at halftime and was just as solid in helping the Texans stave off a late rally, finishing with 24 points and also adding nine rebounds for the game. Kidd made 10-of-14 shots from the field, while Miller shot 50-percent from the field including 5-of-9 from beyond the arc on his way to finishing with 23 points. Miller's final three-pointer came with 3 minutes, 16 seconds remaining in the game to stop a Cardinal rally and put the Texans back up by ten, 79-69.
Trinity Valley began the second half with an 8-2 run to cut the Texan lead to 13 in just over 90-seconds. SPC responded and would again increase their lead by as many as 15-points.
With just over four minutes remaining in the game, the Texans would see their lead dwindle to only five. That's when Miller went to work, making a field goal with 3:55 remaining, and then putting the game away with his final three-pointer to make it 79-69 with only a little more than three minutes to go in the ballgame.
Also coming up big for the Texans was Yanick Moreira, SPC's 6-foot, 10-inch post from Luanda, Angola. Moreira finished the game with his first career double-double in a Texan uniform with 16 points and 12 rebounds.
The Texans cannot spend much time savoring this victory as they will once again have their hands full Saturday afternoon against the No. 13 ranked Lamar-Port Arthur Seahawks. Lamar blasted SPC rival Howard College 95-61 in earlier action of the East-West Classic.
South Plains College and Lamar are scheduled to tip-off at 2 p.m. Live stats can be found at www.spctexans.com. This game will not be streamed over the internet.
