SNYDER, Texas - The No. 6 ranked South Plains College Lady Texan cross country team traveled to Snyder with hopes of making a statement that they are a team to reckon with leading into the NJCAA Championships November 12. They made that statement when Lady Texan runners claimed the top three spots and all five scoring competitors in the top 10.
For the fourth time this season freshman Darroneshia Lott took top honors. The freshman from Pensacola, Fla. clocked the winning time of 18 minutes, 4.3 seconds to claim the title in front of her teammate and last season's NJCAA runner-up Natoya Goule. Goule crossed the line with a time of 18:20.5.
Kirsten Taylor rounded out the 1-2-3 Lady Texan sweep with a clocking of 18:34.1.
Also running for the Lady Texans were freshmen Britney Shedd (21:03.2) and Kateland Maddox (21:33.1) who finished 19th and 25th, respectively.
The Lady Texans finished with 23 team points, 19 better than NJCAA No. 4 ranked El Paso.
The No. 8 ranked Texan cross country team also had a solid showing but just could not quite match the overall team strength of No. 12 El Paso.
Sophomore Kemoy Campbell won the individual title for the Texans with a time of 24:25.1. Isacc Placencia (26:03.6) finished third overall and Bretton Villarreal (27:00.0) accompanied his teammates in the top 10 with a tenth place finish. Anthonio Mascoll (27:17.7) and Rene Escobedo (27:34.1) rounded out the scoring for the Texans with finishes of 13th and 16th. Jonathan Lira (28:02.8) and Luke Samarron (29:46.3) also ran for the Texans, crossing the line 18th and 30th.
The Texans finished with a team total of 38 points, 14 behind El Paso.
South Plains College is now geared up for the NJCAA cross country championships November 12 and hosted by New Mexico Junior College in Hobbs, N.M.
