LEVELLAND, Texas - The South Plains College athletic department will host the annual ‘Meet the Texans' barbecue cook-off and dinner October 31 in the SPC Sundown Room. The event is set to begin at 5:00 p.m. and cost of the meal is $5 for adults and $3 for children ages 6-11.
Billy Gillispie, head men's basketball coach for the Texas Tech Red Raiders, will be in attendance and will serve as the celebrity judge of the cook-off along with former Texas Tech athletic director Gerald Myers and longtime Red Raider Corky Oglesby.
‘Meet the Texans' is a great opportunity for fans to meet the 2011-12 Texan and Lady Texan athletic teams and coaching staffs. Fans in attendance will also enjoy music performed by SPC students from the Commercial Music department.
The annual event is scheduled slightly earlier than in recent years.
"Normally we schedule ‘Meet the Texans' during the afternoon of our first basketball game," says SPC athletic director Joe Tubb. "However, this year we felt scheduling in conjunction with the Halloween Carnival would give residents of Levelland the opportunity to enjoy this event before moving on to the SPC Halloween Carnival in the same building."
The Texan basketball team will also conduct a scrimmage following the event with West Texas A&M beginning at 6:15 p.m. in the Texan Dome. The Texan and Lady Texan basketball teams each open their regular seasons November 4-5 with the Texans traveling to Odessa for matchups with Ranger College and North Lake College, while the Lady Texans will travel to Thatcher, Ariz. and square off against Eastern Arizona and Mesa Community College.
The first home contest of 2011 will take place November 12 when the Lady Texans host Cisco College at 2 p.m. The Texans will host home contests in the Texan Dome the following weekend, November 18-19.
