LUBBOCK, Texas - The South Plains College rodeo teams have begun competing in their final fall rodeo and Texan Murphey Black staked his claim as a contender in the field of tie-down ropers by posting a time of 11.2 seconds during Thursday evening's first performance. Black's performance sets the standard as the 86 remaining tie-down ropers will be gunning for his time.
Russell Schilling, who finished third overall last week in Perryton, was unable to record a time and will not be a contender in Lubbock.
Tyke Kipp gave himself a shot at making Saturday's short round in steer wrestling when he recorded the third best time of the night at 5.8 seconds, slightly behind the leading times of 5.4 and 5.7 seconds made by competitors from Sul Ross and Western Texas, respectively.
Similarly, Kelli Kindig tied for the third best time of the night in the goat tying competition as she finished in 11.1 seconds. Teammate Laramie Wing recorded a time of 12.5 seconds for fifth best of the evening.
Jessie Kate Cole completed the barrels in 16.7 seconds for the fourth best time of the night.
Competing eighth in breakaway roping, freshman Kelsee Watkins appeared to have taken the lead in the event when she quickly roped her calf. Unfortunately it was announced that Watkins made an illegal catch and was given a ‘No Time.'
Also competing were bull riders Trey Paul Meeks and Kory McLaughlin. Both were unable to record scores as both gave great effort but could not hang on before the eight second buzzer sounded.
The Texas Tech rodeo continues with slack Friday morning from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. A second performance is scheduled for Friday evening at 7 p.m.
