ALPINE, Texas - The South Plains College rodeo teams traveled to Alpine to compete in the Sul Ross State University rodeo September 29 - October 1 and had a good showing by advancing six athletes to Saturday evening's short round.

Sophomore J.T. Pettitt put himself in good position Thursday night in the bull riding competition by riding to a score of 84 points. The performance was second best overall and only one point behind the leader. In Saturday's short round, Pettitt was not one of only two who recorded a score and he fell to fourth in the average to earn a total of 80 championship points for the rodeo.

Also competing Thursday evening was Tyke Kipp in the Saddle Bronc. Kipp's score of 61 tied for ninth. Kipp was unable to record a score in Saturday's short round and finished tenth overall.

Coming off a solid performance last week, Ty Willick once again advanced to the short round in steer wrestling after turning in a time of 5.5 seconds Saturday morning. Willick's performance put him in a three-way tie for sixth. In the short round, Willick finished in 7-seconds and finished with a two day total of 12.5 seconds to finish seventh overall.

The Lady Texans advanced two to the goat tying finals, Sarah Walker and Laramie Wing.

Competing Friday morning, Walker completed the long round with a time of 7.8 seconds while Wing's time Saturday morning was 8.3 seconds. Walker would advance with the fifth best time, earning 20 team points, and Wing would sneak in with the ninth best time. In the short round, Walker would again finish with the fifth best time of 10.4 seconds to earn 20 more points. She would go on to finish fifth in the average and would finish the rodeo with 60 points.

Wing's short round time of 11.4 seconds was seventh best in the round and would move her up to seventh overall.

Kimberly Hendley earned 10 points and also advanced to Saturday's short round by clocking 2.6 seconds in breakaway roping. Hendley did not record a score Saturday evening and finished seventh overall.

Both men's and women's teams finished eighth overall in the team scoring and will travel again this weekend when they compete in the Vernon College rodeo October 6-8.
