LUBBOCK, Texas - Sophomore Kemoy Campbell went straight to the lead and never looked back as he easily captured the individual championship Friday afternoon during the Texas Tech Open held at Meadowbrook Golf Course. Campbell completed the 8,000-meter course in 24 minutes, 42.56 seconds to win the men's race by 12 seconds and help the Texans to a fifth place finish.
Sophomore Isacc Placencia was SPC's next runner to cross the line, finishing 12th place overall with a time of 26:38.34 and was followed by Bretton Villarreal (27:48.38) in 33rd, Anthonio Mascoll (28:17.54) in 47th, Rene Escobedo (29:27.75) in 70th, and Luke Samarron (29:46.15) in 72nd. The Texans finished with a team total of 136 points.
In the women's race, freshman Darroneshia Lott led the Lady Texans for the second consecutive week as she completed the 5,000-meter course in 19:22.75 for a fifth place finish. Kirsten Taylor (19:43.18) followed in seventh while Michaela Johnson (20:43.09) finished 21st, Tiffany Matthews (21:18.00) crossed the line 27th overall. Freshman Kateland Maddox (22:53.31) rounded out the team scoring for the Lady Texans when she finished 53rd. Brittany Shedd also competed and finished 62nd. The Lady Texans scored 99 team points to finish fourth in the team standings.
The cross country season is scheduled to continue for South Plains College when they travel to Las Vegas, N.M. to compete in the New Mexico Highlands Invitational Saturday, September 24.
