HUTCHINSON, Kan. - The 2011 NJCAA track and field championships are officially underway at Gowans Stadium on the campus of Hutchinson Community College in Kansas.
Day one did not quite begin favorably for the Texans as Stormy Smothers had to withdraw from the decathlon competition after entering with the second best score. Joey Villarreal just missed scoring in the men's 10,000 meter run when he placed 10th overall with a time of 34 minutes, 6.28 seconds.
The meet heats up in its second day with finals scheduled for the men's and women's triple jump and shot put as well as the women's pole vault and men's javelin. Running event finals include the 4x800 meter relays and the 3,000 meter steeplechase.
