BIG SPRING, Texas - Blake Gagnon had his best performance of the year when it counted most to win the short round of the steer wrestling competition Saturday at the Howard College rodeo in Big Spring. Gagnon eked his way into Saturday's final round with a 10th best time of 7.0 seconds in his first attempt. He then proceeded to blow away the field on Saturday, clocking a time of 4.6 seconds to win the round and take second in the overall average to earn a total of 110 points in the event.
In breakaway roping, Kelli Kindig easily advanced to the short round with a time of 2.7 seconds, tied for the second best. Kindig failed to record a time in the final.
Carley Richardson's time of 17.32 seconds in barrel racing earned her an opportunity to race in Saturday's short round as the 10th best qualifier. Richardson recorded a time of 22.32 seconds in the final to finish eighth overall.
The South Plains College rodeo teams have one competition remaining on their 2011 spring schedule and will compete again April 28-30 at the Tarleton State rodeo in Stephenville.
