With only four rodeos remaining on the schedule, the Lady Texan squad is currently ranked eighth in the Southwest Region, while the Texans are No. 10.
Sophomore Ben Ramey has the best opportunity to make a return trip to the College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR) held June 11-19 in Casper, Wyo. In his first rodeo of the spring held three weeks ago at Ranger College, Ramey improved his position from fifth to second with a dominating performance in the steer wrestling competition. He will have plenty of time to watch the competition this weekend as he is not scheduled to compete at Odessa until Saturday morning.
SPC head rodeo coach Kerry Doster says Ramey is competing at an entirely different level compared to last year.
"He (Ramey) has a really good work ethic," says the first year SPC coach. "He is very open minded and ready for change, whatever will make him better. He is there to win and having kids like that around is just a blessing, they make coaching easy."
Ramey's 310 points in the event trails Tarleton State's Kiel Rown by 55 points. He has several hot on his heels with 295 points occupying fourth place. Only the top three are assured of a spot in the National Finals.
Events begin today at 7 p.m. and qualifying will continue through Saturday morning. The top 10 in each event will compete in the final performance Saturday evening.
