
LEVELLAND, Texas - Greg Gainey and Brandon Thompson were each recently named to the Western Junior College Athletic Conference (WJCAC) all-conference first team. Teammate Derrell Edwards earned honorable mention honors and Gainey was also named to the all-Region 5 team.
Gainey, 6-foot, 5-inch forward from Dayton, Ohio, led the Texans in scoring with a little more than 14 points per game and shot 62-percent from the field during his first season with South Plains College. He had a season high of 34 points in a November game against Jacksonville College and also averaged 5 ½ rebounds during the season with a best of 11 rebounds against Chandler-Gilbert.
A sophomore transfer from Arizona State University, Brandon
Thompson averaged 10.3
points per game while handling much of the point guard
duties for the Texans. A native of San
Antonio, Thompson had a season high 31 points in a December victory over
Coastal Bend College.
A 6-2 freshman from Baltimore, Maryland, Derrell Edwards
averaged 12.1 points per game while making 29 appearances during the season and
had a season high 25 points to help South Plains to a January victory over
Odessa College.
The South Plains College Texans finished the season with an overall record of 17 wins and 13 losses and advanced to the Region 5 tournament for the 11th consecutive season.
