ROSWELL, N.M. - The South Plains College Texans (16-12, 5-8) defeated the New Mexico Military Broncos (10-18, 2-11) Monday 71-63 Monday night behind double figure scoring from three players and 82-percent free throw shooting on the night. The victory sets up a Thursday night showdown with New Mexico Junior College at the Texan Dome.
Malcolm Miller led the Texans with a team high of 17 points and a game high 8 rebounds, while Stanton Kidd scored 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field and a perfect 5-of-5 from the free throw line. Greg Gainey chipped in with 11 points on 5-of-8 from the field.
The Texans, who have struggled from the free throw line for much of the season, made 14-of-17 attempts (.824) including several late that kept the game out of reach.
South Plains will host New Mexico Junior College (19-8, 6-7) Thursday night in a game that will decide who goes to the Region 5 tournament as the No. 4 seed from the Western Junior College Athletic Conference (WJCAC). A victory over the Thunderbirds would force a tie in the standings, however, the Texans would earn the tie breaker based on their January 20 victory over Odessa College, currently the No. 3 seed from the WJCAC.
HPRN's Michael Wiiest will call the courtside action on KLVT 1230 AM and www.hprnetwork.com, while the crew from SPC TV will provide a link for a live video stream that will be accessible at www.spctexans.com.
