ODESSA, Texas - Derrell Edwards scored a team high 21 points on 9-of-12 shooting from the field, but that was not nearly enough as the South Plains College Texans (14-12, 3-8) were dealt their fifth consecutive loss by Odessa College (22-5, 8-3) Monday night.
Not much seemed to fall the Texans way in the first half as SPC fell behind early and as many as 12 points before scoring the final four points of the half to go to halftime looking at a 39-31 deficit.
After the Wranglers began the second half with a three point bucket to extend their lead to 11, SPC went on a 14-4 run to get back into the game. With 14 minutes, 39 seconds to go in the game, Malcolm Miller hit a shot that tied the game 47-47.
Odessa responded with an 11-0 scoring run of their own and the Texans would not get any closer than eight points and found themselves down by as many as 24 before the buzzer sounded with a final score of 95-82.
In addition to Edwards, Deshaunt Walker scored 17 points, while Miller added 11. Greg Gainey chipped in with 10 points along with eight rebounds. Stanton Kidd pulled down a game high 11 rebounds and also scored seven points.
The Texans will return to the Texan Dome Thursday, February 17 when they play host to Frank Phillips College (11-16, 3-8) with a tip off scheduled for 7:45 p.m. The SPC athletic department is asking fans to ‘Pink Out' the dome to help raise breast cancer awareness. Additionally, raffle tickets will be available at the gate for a chance to win a two night trip for two to Las Vegas. Raffle tickets are $2 each, or three for $5 and the proceeds will go to assist qualifying women receive a screening mammogram at Covenant Hospital of Levelland.
