LEVELLAND, Texas - Sajoyia Griffin, Tramar Sutherland and Josh Orta all signed national letters of intent to continue their college basketball careers Friday afternoon inside the T-Club lounge located at the Texan Dome.
Lady Texan head basketball coach Michelle Wyatt described Griffin as the type of person who would call on Saturday and Sunday to see if the gym would be open so she could come and shoot.
"San Diego State is fired up about getting her. They made it to the sweet 16 last year and were led by a senior guard who is moving on, so she has some big shoes to fill but Sajoyia convinced them she was ready. We are excited to watch her over the next couple of years," says the Lady Texan head coach.
Griffin was named Most Valuable Player of the Western Junior College Athletic Conference (WJCAC) and was also a 2nd team all-American selection in 2010.
SPC Texan head coach Steve Green said that some of Sutherland's recruiting paperwork listed him to be 6 feet, 6 inches tall when he looked to add him to the Texan roster two years ago. Green then added that he certainly came and played like he was.
Sutherland has signed with the University of Arkansas at Little Rock and Green believes he will be the ‘glue' player UALR needs.
"When they came to watch him they said that he is nothing like anything they have," Green said.
In one year with the Texans Orta logged nearly 900 minutes in 29 games at the point guard position, averaging over 30 minutes per contest. He played the entire 40 minutes of the game seven times during the season.
Orta will be joining Saint Mary's University in his hometown of San Antonio. The Rattlers finished the season with a record of 17 wins and 13 losses and came just short of the Heartland Conference tournament championship when they fell to Incarnate word 65-63.
