The South Plains College Texan and Lady Texan basketball
teams are set to host Midland College tonight at the Texan Dome. The
women's game is scheduled for 5:45 p.m. while the men are scheduled to start at
7:45 p.m. Mike Mamantov and Ameriprise Financial will host a VIP
reception for SPC employees from 5:30-7 p.m. in the Texan Dome.
The Lady Texans (15-7, 6-1) square off with the Lady Chaparrals (22-3, 6-1)
with the lead in the Western Junior College Athletic Conference standings on
the line. Both teams enter the contest red hot with Midland on a six game
winning streak and SPC winners of five in a row.
The Lady Chaps are averaing a hair over 67 points per game in WJCAC actions and
are led by Lauren Mansfield, 5-7 guard from Austrailia who leads the team
points, assists and steals.
The Lady Texans will look to sophomore guard Sajoyia Griffin and freshman post
Kelsey Canavan to lead the way. Griffin, a 5-5 guard from Universal City,
Texas, leads the Lady Texans with nearly 14 points per game and Canavan has
recorded nine double-doubles so far this season.
Coach Steve Green's SPC Texans (14-8, 4-4) look to rebound from a tough 61-60
loss to Howard College this past Thursday against No. 1 ranked Midland College
(24-0, 8-0).
In conference play the Chaparrals are averaging 80 points per game and have
three players scoring 10 points per game or more, led by Jordan Walker's 17
points and 13 rebound per game.
The Texans have four players scoring 10 points or more in WJCAC action, led by
sophomore Bo Ingram, averaging 13 points per game while shooting 43-percent
from the field.
The SPC men currently find themselves in a tie for third place in the WJCAC
standings with Odessa College (19-5, 4-4), one game ahead of Frank Phillips
(17-7, 3-5) and New Mexico (16-8, 3-5).
