BIG SPRING, Texas - The South Plains College Lady Texans (15-7, 6-1) are winners of five games in a row and remain in a tie for first place in the Western Junior College Athletic Conference (WJCAC) with Midland College after Thursdays 54-47 victory over Howard College (18-5, 3-4).
Freshman Kelsey Canavan led the way for the Lady Texans with 14 points and 13 rebounds, earning her ninth double-double of the season. Sophomores Sajoyia Griffin and Christen McLee each chipped in 11 points.
SPC struck first just over a minute into the contest when Griffin converted two points inside the paint. After that bucket, however, both teams struggled to score many points over the first ten minutes of the game. Just before the midway point of the first half, Howard led 9-8. With 10:08 remaining on the clock, Sophy Ngobeni gave SPC the lead with a layup and the Lady Texans would not look back for the remainder of the half, heading to the locker room with a nine point lead, 26-17.
SPC began the second half by scoring eight consecutive points to stretch the lead to 17 points, the biggest lead of the game.
The Lady Hawks would begin to chip away at the SPC lead and would pull to within single digits with under 12 minutes remaining.
A three point bucket by Griffin with 9-minutes remaining gave SPC a comfortable 11 point lead, 45-34. This did not faze the Lady Hawks as they went on a 10-2 scoring run over the next 6-minutes to pull within three and make it a one possession contest, 47-44.
South Plains College was able to regroup after Coach Michelle Wyatt called a timeout with two minutes remaining, scoring seven unanswered points to take a commanding lead and leaving only seconds on the clock to seal the victory with the eventual final score being 54-47.
The Lady Texans will return to action on Monday, February 8th when they face 10th ranked Midland College at the Texan Dome at 5:45 p.m. Ameriprise Financial and Mike Mamantov will be hosting a VIP reception for all South Plains College employees from 5:30 p.m. until 7 p.m. Fajitas will be served in the Texan Dome and employees will be encouraged to register for a chance to win a $100.00 door prize.
